Hire it
In the past, I’ve been known to spend a bit of cash on the latest and greatest game for whatever console was taking my fancy at the time – Play Station, Xbox, Nintendo – you name it. But no more – this frivolous spending has come to an end.
Instead of throwing away the usual $100 or so a game, I am going to hire them and only purchase those truly worthy – games that you can replay over and over – think Mario Kart or Goldeneye for the Nintendo 64…classics.
As an example, I picked up ‘Heavenly Sword’ from the local video shop for $7.50 to test out my newly acquired PS3 and clocked it in roughly 9 hours (which is about average for a single player game these days).
Doing the math, this equates to roughly 83 cents per hour of entertainment (Its a good game but I doubt I will have desire to play it through again any time soon). In comparison if I had of purchased it, I’d be paying somewhere in the range of $10-15 per hour for the same level of entertainment and enjoyment – which seems a little ridiculous to me.
I can’t help but wonder if there is some viable business model which can bring gaming to the masses for a fraction of the cost without the limitations of hiring games from the local video store…food for thought I guess.
